Introduction

Greetings tech support community. I would like to start off by introducing myself. My name is Toby. I serve as the head sound tech and acting technical director at Flipside Church in Rancho Cucamonga, CA. I've been running sound for over 15 years, and my formal background in electrical engineering has given me a unique perspective and understanding into the technical aspects of putting on a church service.

I recently attended a creative arts seminar at Willow Creek in Chicago. It was an encouraging time to see artists and techies from around the world come together. While I was there, I felt inspired to take some initiative in addressing a hole I have observed in the church community, namely, how to serve God in this role in a meeningful way, while often living under the shadow of those on stage. The first step is opening up this blog.

What I'm hoping to accomplish is an open forum where artists and techies can comment on entries, and hopefully we can learn how to serve together a little better. This is something that is constantly on my heart, because in my experience, our role is often silent and thankless. This can unfortunately sometimes breed an environment where an "us" and "them" mentality can thrive, and I think this leads to ineffective worship and non-unity where the focus should be solely on the One we serve.

So, if you're reading this, please comment on what your experiences are in this area. I want to hear from everybody, and I promise that if your comment is at least somewhat intelligent, I'll post it.

Thanks.
